The Orcia valley (Valdorcia, Tuscany)

The "Val d'Orcia Park" a historic, artistic and landscape area of extraordinary beauty bordering the regions of Tuscany and Lazio in the famous "triangle" between Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano, was named a UNESCO patrimony in 2004. Its rolling hills with rough but generous countryside characterised by cracks in the clay hillsides of volcanic decent, rows of unending vineyards and winding lanes bordered by the tall, proud cypress trees - a scenery that has made this land so admired throughout the world. The valley runs along the river Orcia and widens at the foot hills of the extinct volcano of Mount Amiata. Medieval villages, castles and convents lay scattered over its' hilltops as artistic and cultural testimonies to be protected and safe-guarded by the proud heirs of this land.

A combination of particularities in the tuscan countryside make it one of the very few natural regions able to change its colour and atmosphere during each season, enchanting people from all over the world to discover its charms for themselves. Although the people from this region come from a hard working agricultural background, they have developed a true economic alternative in crafts and gastronomic specialities which are sold in picturesque shops, bars and restaurants to be found the old towns and villages.
